Main Entry:
vit·ri·ol
Pronunciation:
\ˈvi-trē-əl\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English, from Anglo-French vitriole, from Medieval Latin vitriolum, alteration of Late Latin vitreolum, neuter of vitreolus glassy, from Latin vitreus vitreous
Date:
14th century
1 a: a sulfate of any of various metals (as copper, iron, or zinc) ; especially : a glassy hydrate of such a sulfate b: oil of vitriol2: something felt to resemble vitriol especially in caustic quality ; especially : virulence of feeling or of speech

this word defines how i feel today at job#2.  what makes me feel this way: Ivy League Incompetence.

question: how many times can one be asked how to change the blade on a matt knife before getting angry?  answer: two, the third asking will make you respond in a vitriolic fashion.

question: how many times can one be asked how to support a scenery flat before getting angry? answer: two, the third asking will make you respond in a vitriolic fashion.

question: how many times can one be asked how to set up a galvanized fence on a stage before getting angry? answer: well, i bet you've guessed the answer by now.

all of these questions are coming from the same two people "in charge" of a theater group.  they did not plan in advance so they don't know what they're doing.  they did not listen to our suggestions as to how to do what they want to do - but they did call in an outside contractor to help with the fencing.  after being told, you guessed it, twice and after physically assembling the fence sections in our shop with existing materials.  i told this group twice where to go inside home depot or lowes to get exactly what they needed.  instead they chose to call a fencing contractor and have him come to our shop.  he came in when the boss was here and i do believe the boss gave this group a little lecture about not listening.  i know i just did.  and in a vitriolic manner.

i would think that it's just me not explaining things well enough - except that i've explained the scenery flat-into-wall bit to plenty of people this semester alone and no one else has asked a second time, much less a third.

misogynist fucks or not, i can't help but listen to combichrist.

not my favorite, but the link was handy.  check out Sent To Destroy for some good aggro fun.

i've had a minor musical dilemma for the past year or two.  i found a band with a sound that really melts my butter - aggro, dancey, hard, wild, fun.  but the lyrics in some of the songs, esp. the early ones, can be quite misogynistic.  if the actual words are not heard - just the voice like it's another instrument - all is good.  but the lyrics... this man needs a large heavy boot to the head.  repeatedly.

oh, the band is combichrist.

this is the sound that i adore - but not the content!!! fucker!!! so nearly perfect.

i have to admit that i listen to his music but make an effort to not play "those" songs.  am i a terrible person?  i'm always lazily searching for new [to me] music and i don't often find a sound that i respond to as viscerally as combichrist.  sometimes i turn off the music in disgust and vow that i'll never listen to it again and will tell the world not to listen with me.  but then a month later it creeps back into my mind.... i just can't stop.

... is it made better or worse by the fact that i didn't pay for his music ... ?

some of you may have met tidbit, my darling littlest cat who is full of rage and fury.  well, maybe not so much fury these days as she routinely sits on jason's lap and follows me around looking for love...even if it's on her terms.  .

tonight she got her first hat.  i made her a fez and tonight she wore it around the house.

today while shirking the endless work here at the shop, i found a site written by a bus driver who works in minneapolis, mn.  i loved the title Picking Up Strangers and thought i'd give it a look-see.  a few posts in the author asks if anyone has seen one of her regular passengers who's been missing for a little while.   the comments section has another driver writing to let everyone know that the lady has been found and is ok.

what a nice thing to read.  no, not the missing lady bit, but rather the concern and that people still can go out of their way to make sure someone and her little dog are doing ok.

this was also a nice counterpoint to the photos of stupidity-on-the-roads-of-america that dale the truck driver [also from mn] posts on his site Life 8 Feet Up

can you tell i'm fascinated by all things traffic?  have you seen How We Drive?  or for fun youtube traffic patterns in Hanoi...  simply breathtaking.

this little comp. video has a terrible title [and premise?] about "bad women drivers" or something [my italian is crapola].  but it's an entertaining few minutes of other people doing silly things in their cars.

[hope the link works, i found this via How We Drive and it was the top entry today.]

why do i hate the schuylkill?  what should have been a 25 minute journey took over an hour due to "construction".  it's in quotes because there was less than 1/4 mile of one lane blocked off for workers, one state trooper with flashers on, and one construction vehicle - lights off, no workers in sight anywhere.

it's just dumb chance that i took the highway home from work tonight, i could easily have gone another way.  but i thought this way faster.  boy was i wrong.

i would care less if i hadn't just worked a very intense night at the shop and it wasn't now 12.50 [i got home at 12.45] and i'm due back at work at 5.00.  who needs sleep.

we have a new table saw at the shop.  it's very nice.  it's a SawStop 10" contractor saw - watch the "hot dog" video on the site and see what this baby can do to save fingers.

any conductive material in the wood triggers the stop action.  all of the students ask if they can test out the stop feature.  we tell them "you break it, you bought it!"

January 20: Patch Day

US Democracy Server: Patch Notes
Version 44.0

President

* Leadership: Will now scale properly to national crises. Intelligence was not being properly applied.
* A bug has been fixed that allowed the President to ignore the effects of debuffs applied by the Legislative classes.
* Drain Treasury: There appears to be a bug that allowed loot to be transferred from the treasury to anyone on the President’s friends list, or in the President’s party. We are investigating.
* Messages to and from the President will now be correctly saved to the chat log.
* Messages originating from the President were being misclassified as originating from The American People.
* A rendering error that frequently caused the President to appear wrapped in the American Flag texture has been addressed.

Vice President

* The Vice President has been correctly reclassified as a pet.
* No longer immune to damage from the Legislative and Judicial classes.
* The Vice President will no longer aggro on friendly targets. This bug was identified with Ranged Attacks and the Head Shot ability.
* Reveal Identity: this debuff will no longer be able to target Covert Operatives.
* Messages to and from the Vice President will now be correctly saved to the chat log.
* A rendering bug was affecting the Vice President’s visibility, making him virtually invisible to the rest of the server. This has been addressed.

Cabinet

* There was a bug in the last release that prevented the Cabinet from disagreeing with the President, which was the cause of a number of serious balance issues. This bug has been addressed, and we will continue to monitor the situation.

Judiciary

* Many concerns have been raised regarding balance issues in the Supreme Court. This system is maintained on a different patch schedule, and will require longer to address.
* A large number of NPCs in the Judiciary were incorrectly flagged "ideological." We are trying to identify these cases and rectify this situation.

Homeland Security

* Homeland Security Advisory System: We have identified a bug in this system that prevents the threat level from dropping below Elevated (Yellow). The code for Guarded (Blue) and Low (Green) has been commented out. We are testing the fix and hope to have it in by the next patch.
* Torture: This debuff is being removed after a record number of complaints.
* Item: Large Bottle of Water is incorrectly generating threat with TSA Agents when held in inventory. We are looking into the issue.
* Asking questions about Homeland Security was incorrectly triggering the Chain-Jingoism debuff.

Economy

* Serious on-going issues with server economy are still being addressed. We expect further roll-backs, and appreciate your help identifying and fixing bugs. We can’t make these fixes without your help.

PVP

* Reputation with various factions are being rebalanced. The gradated reputation scale was erroneously being overwritten by the binary For Us/Against Us flag.

Quests

* The” Desert Storm” quest chain was displaying an erroneous "Mission Accomplished" message near the beginning of the chain.
* The quest chain that begins with “There’s no Cake like Yellow Cake” and terminates with “W-M-Denied” has been identified as uncompletable, and has been removed.

Reagents

* Many recipes that currently call for Crude Oil can now be made with Wind, Solar, Geothermal and Ethanol reagents. We hope to roll out even more sweeping changes in the next patch.

Events

* The “Axis of Evil” event is drawing to a close. Look forward to the “Rebuilding Bridges” event starting in January.
